Published on May 31, 2018 at 10:44PM by By Sarah Ravani
Protesters in the Mission District blocked tech buses from leaving San Francisco on Thursday morning, tossing scooters into the street to waylay the commuters. The activists, blocking buses at the intersection of 24th and Valencia streets, set off smoke bombs and carried signs that read “Techsploitation Is Toxic,” and “Sweep Tech Not Tents,” in reference to the city’s recent efforts to clear homeless encampments. The protest wound down just before 10 a.m. Sarah Ravani is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. Email: sravani@sfchronicle.com Twitter: @SarRavani

SFGATE: Wildfires continue to burn in Contra Costa, Alameda counties
Published on May 31, 2018 at 08:04PM by By Sophie Haigney
Firefighters on Thursday continued to battle seven wildfires that erupted a day prior in Contra Costa County, combatting strong headwinds as they tried to contain the blaze. The fires began around 1 p.m. Wednesday and are burning in the area between Camino Diablo and the Alameda County line, officials said. The fires crossed the county line burn about 500 acres by Wednesday night, and firefighters had reached 35 percent containment. “It’s a wind-driven fire and we’re still dealing with 40 to 50 mile per hour winds,” said Scott McLean, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

New top story from Time: Science Teacher Tackled Gunman Who Wounded 2 at Indiana Middle School, Student Says
A student at an Indiana middle school says he saw his science teacher tackle a fellow student who fired shots inside the classroom.
Seventh-grader Ethan Stonebraker says the class was taking a test at Noblesville West Middle School when the student walked in late, pulled out a gun and started firing.
He says the teacher “immediately ran at him, swatted a gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground.” Stonebraker adds, “if it weren’t for him, more of us would have been injured for sure.”
The teacher and a student were injured in the shooting. Authorities didn’t have any information about their conditions.

SFGATE: Muni train derails to halt SF subway service in the Castro
Published on May 25, 2018 at 08:21PM by By Sophie Haigney
Muni’ s subway service was blocked Friday morning at Castro Street due to a train derailment, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said. Shuttles will be running from West Portal to Church Station while the delay persists, and officials encouraged commuters to take Muni Metro alternatives, like the F-Market and Wharves, to travel along Market Street. “Crews working to clear the train, but delay could last through rush hour,” the SFMTA said on Twitter. The subway is running from Church to Embarcadero, said Paul Rose, a Muni spokesman. The N Judah and J Church lines are unaffected. Sophie Haigney is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
SFGATE: Tractor-trailer fire on I-880 causes severe traffic near Oakland
Published on May 25, 2018 at 07:38PM by By Sophie Haigney
A tractor-trailer caught fire early Friday morning and shut down lanes to cause severe traffic on northbound Interstate 880 just south of Oakland, officials said. The California Highway Patrol issued a severe traffic alert at 6:17 a.m. and the right lane remains closed as of 7 a.m. The trailer caught fire around 3:30 a.m., according to the CHP. The tractor detached from the trailer, which then became fully engulfed in flames to close all lanes. Several lanes were reopened as of 7:00 a.m., but the right lane remained closed and CHP had no estimated time for it to reopen. Authorities advised drivers to use alternate routes.

President Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter, Federal Judge Rules
SFGATE: Judge: President can't block critics on Twitter
Published on May 23, 2018 at 11:11PM by
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York says President Donald Trump violates the First Amendment by blocking critics on Twitter for political speech. Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald (rees BUHK'-wahld) in Manhattan issued the written decision Wednesday. In ruling, she said no government official — including the president — is above the law. The case was brought last July by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and seven individuals blocked by Trump after criticizing the Republican president. After a hearing this year, the judge had suggested that Trump mute rather than block some of his critics. At the time, a Justice Department attorney agreed that muting would enable Trump to avoid a tweet he doesn't want to read.

SFGATE: Kerr gets just one pregame question from room full of reporters
Published on May 21, 2018 at 05:01AM by By Bruce Jenkins
It’s hard to recall a less informative press conference than the one coach Steve Kerr held before Sunday night’s Game 3 of the Warriors-Houston series. It wasn’t Kerr’s fault; he was more than ready to speak at length. But perhaps we’ve reached the point where there’s nothing left to say — just play the game, already. With the interview room packed with writers both local and national, Kerr stepped to the podium at about 3:15 p.m. He got a question that was so impossibly vague, he could barely muster an answer. And then ... nothing. The room fell silent. “That was awesome,” said a smiling Kerr as he stood up and walked back to the locker room.

SFGATE: Bay to Breakers kicks off in San Francisco
Published on May 20, 2018 at 08:36PM by By Annie Ma and Jill Tucker
Some, as usual, were naked. Others decided it was a good idea to run the annual Bay to Breakers 12 kilometers Sunday as a unicorn, a gorilla, dinosaur, superhero or whatever else suited their only-in-San-Francisco fancy. And there were the outliers dressed as runners. But as runners filtered to the starting area, the bag on Jim Doxsee’s head drew stares — not an easy feat in a crowd of an estimated 50,000. Doxsee, 55, of Pleasanton, wore a paper grocery bag that said “Trump is president so I’m ashamed” written on the back and front, with a cutout for his face.
