Wildfire ‘growing a lot faster’ than past blazes, smoke blankets Bay Area

The inferno scorching the hills of Yolo and Napa counties grew nearly 10,000 acres overnight — surpassing the size of San Francisco — as fire crews attempted to get a handle on the blaze, officials said. The County Fire, which erupted at 2:15 Saturday afternoon along Highway 16 north of Lake Berryessa in Yolo County, burned 44,500 acres by Monday morning and is 3 percent contained, according to Cal Fire. By comparison, California’s most destructive wildfire in modern history was last October’s Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa, which burned 36,810 acres. Thirty structures were threatened by the County Fire, officials said.
